Marketing overview

What you must do before your first campaign, and why review exists.

What this is

Marketing is bulk sending — newsletters, announcements, anything going to a list rather than to one person.

It is deliberately separated from your everyday mail. A marketing campaign that goes wrong should never take your invoices and password resets down with it, and keeping the two apart is what makes that true.

How it works

Before an organization can send campaigns, it is reviewed. Your review status is one of pending, approved or rejected, and campaigns unlock once you are approved.

That is not bureaucracy for its own sake. Every sender on shared infrastructure inherits the reputation of everyone else on it, so a single organization sending to a bought list damages delivery for every other customer. Review is what keeps that from happening — and it is why your mail arrives.

While you wait, everything else keeps working. Transactional sending and SMTP credentials are unaffected.

Two things are handled for you rather than left to your good intentions:

  • Unsubscribes. A campaign will not schedule without an unsubscribe link. The check is enforced when you schedule, not left to a reminder.
  • Suppressions. Anyone on your suppression list is skipped, and the campaign's own figures show how many were skipped for that reason.

Set it up

  1. Go to Marketing. The hub lays out the order: contacts, suppressions, deliverability, then your first campaign.
  2. Apply for review if you have not been approved yet.
  3. While waiting, do the work that makes the first campaign land: add your contacts, import your suppression list, and get every sending domain fully authenticated under Deliverability.
  4. Once approved, draft a campaign and send it to a small, engaged group first.
  5. Read the results before you send to everyone. Bounce rate is the number that decides whether the next campaign arrives at all.

When something is wrong

Campaigns are locked. Your organization is not approved yet. Check the status on this page.

You were rejected. Ask what would change the decision. It is usually list provenance — where the addresses came from — rather than anything about your content.

Campaigns are missing entirely, with a message that this deployment does not offer them. Marketing sending is not enabled on this deployment. Transactional sending still works from the Sending area.

You want to send to a list you bought. Do not. It will fail review, and if it did not, it would cost you the delivery of every other message you send.
